Architectural Lichens

Simple organisms, such as lichens, rely on the support of others to transform themselves into something relevant.  They have the ability to thrive anywhere provided the appropriate sustenance, which consists of an exposed surface and the availability of light.  Lichens draw attention to the surface while the surface provides it with a setting/scenario to thrive in.  They ultimately develop a symbiotic relationship with each playing its respective role.  Simplicity and size of the lichen are coupled with the diverse and unique settings.

Bugelow Properties: Lake Cottages

Bugelow Properties, 2009
The new one-story houses are extremely versatile and adaptable to any location.  They are appropriate as seaside cottages, mountain chalets, and even urban retreats. Each 4 sq inch property defines its location as well as being defined by it.

Tower Token: Surrounding Towers

Tower Token, 2009
Despite a common floor plan each tower has a unique height and aperture placement.  This combination produces a collection that belongs together yet has enough variety to provide an interesting image.

4 Lot: Glacial Moss

4 Lot, 2009
Smaller than a penny, each house develops an intimate relationship with its environment.  They provide just enough structure, angles, and edges to deviate themselves from their environment.  However, this deviation is small enough not to separate the two.

Skyline Blocks: Mutual Pink

Skyline Blocks, 2010
Horizontal surfaces are readily available in even the most vertical parts of a city.  They provide foundations for laying out new courses of concrete blocks.  Despite their diminutive size, each block provides a point from which to view the larger world surrounding them.
